Glasgows is pretty unique y’know, not only do we have a fantastic team, but the majority of our staff have been here 8, 10, 12 and even 22 years! Then there’s Bernie, our Company Secretary/ Head of Business Services who joined us on June 14th 1991, which by our reckoning makes today her 25th Glasgow’versary! *Cue the cake and party poppers everyone*
To celebrate we put her under the spotlight…
So Bernie, what have been the biggest changes you’ve seen during your 25 years at Glasgows?
There have been so many changes during my time at Glasgows. When I first joined the company it was predominantly a Public Relations / Advertising Agency and I know this makes me sound ancient but there was only one computer in the company which we shared between ten of us.. Everything was created via a typewriter and I have not so fond memories of the whole team stuffing hundreds of press releases into envelopes last thing at night to meet media deadlines.
Glasgows have continued to evolve and change over the years to adapt to an ever changing financial and technological environment which is why it has stood the test of time and remains such a successful company celebrating it’s 30th birthday this year.
Your favourite Glasgows moment?
It’s been a ball and there have been lots of fabulous moments. I remember having to watch a ‘scantily clad’ male dance troupe perform so we could market them – it was a tough job but someone had to do it…..
It was also great fun when we started to branch out into events management because I had the opportunity to work on a wide range of events throughout the country although I’d rather not mention travelling around Wales dressed as a dinosaur for the Energy Savings Trust!
The iconic Glasgows Christmas parties also bring back great memories, well, we should be able to organise a first class party with our credentials!
How did you start your career at Glasgows?
I left school right in the middle of a recession and realised that the few jobs available at the time all required work experience so rather than go straight to college I decided to sign up to a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) which allowed me to work and also study for a qualification. My plan was to do that for two years then maybe go to university. At that stage I really didn’t know what I wanted to do so I signed up to study the Business and Finance qualification to give me more options. Glasgows were looking for a YTS and we were matched up.
As the youngest member of the team I was asked to help in all areas of the business and one of those jobs involved assisting the then part time Accountant. I loved that part of the job and found I had a certain aptitude for it – who wouldn’t like spending other peoples money?? When my YTS term was ending I was asked if I wanted to study further in the Finance side of things which I was happy to do and spent the next four years studying part time to eventually become a qualified accountant which is ironic when I detested maths at school. The rest is history..
What are you most looking forward to in Glasgows’ future?
These are exciting times, we have just launched our new brand and website and have recently won a gold industry award for our video production, a relatively new service offering. Our IT team are continuing to develop new and innovative products to offer clients and we are expanding in all areas of the business. It’s great to be part of a team which strives for innovation.
Why 25 years? What’s made Glasgows the place to be for you?
I will forever be grateful to Glasgows for releasing the hidden bean counter within me and for the time and investment they made in my training.
25 years is a long time but it certainly hasn’t felt that way because the company has continued to change and evolve. It has remained exciting and varied. Glasgows are a fabulous team of people and everyone is great to work with and over the years I have made friends for life.
Why would I want to go anywhere else?
Happy 25 years Bernie!
